Fifty-Ninth Annual Meeting 2009
Location: Nashville, Tennessee, USAHost: Howard Jones Jnr
Abstracts Due: 1st June 2009
We hope to welcome you all to the 2009 Society of the Pelvic Surgeons annual meeting in Nashville this October. The link to the meeting registration form, Hermitage Hotel registration form and the meeting website is http://sps.vumcevents.com. We will be staying in the newly renovated Hermitage Hotel in downtown Nashville. This classic hotel retains the elegance of earlier times and the large guest rooms have been comfortably appointed and our package includes free wireless internet.
The meeting begins with the traditional welcome reception on Wednesday evening, October 21 at the hotel. On Thursday morning we will bus to the Vanderbilt campus for the scientific sessions which will include a robotic surgery demonstration and a tour of the new simulation lab. Our spouses will tour the campus and hear some interesting talks by members of the undergraduate faculty. We will get together for lunch at the University Club and then in the afternoon we will visit the plantation home of Andrew Jackson, seventh president of the United States. The home was built in 1821 and there is an interesting museum on the property which describes the frontier life in Middle Tennessee in the early 1800s. We'll have a Southern supper and square dancing so wear your blue jeans and cowboy boots.
On Friday the scientific session at the hotel will feature a Presidential panel exploring the "The Pelvic Surgeon in the Upper Abdomen." Our spouses will spend the morning at a cooking class or shopping at the Green Hills Mall (Burberry, Brooks Brothers, Anne Klein, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany, Wolford, Apple Store, Davis Kidd Bookstore plus all the usual stores). We get together for lunch and then we are off to the Country Music Hall of Fame and a recording studio to make a record. We'll get to see and hear how the real artists "lay down the tracks" and then we will join in for the chorus. Everyone will take home a CD of our group to remember your time in Music City. (If there are any singers, songwriters or musicians in the group just waiting to be discovered, let me know ahead of time and we'll see if we can put something special together for you.)
Friday evening the Wassail Banquet will be held in the Parthenon, the only full scale replica of Athena's Temple in Athens.
Saturday morning there will be the business meeting and the final scientific session highlighted by President Ken Hatch's address. Spouses are invited to this portion of the program and after the address we will install the new president and then have a Presidential Toast before adjourning.
On Saturday evening, October 24, there is an optional excursion to Nashville's famous Grand Ole Opry, which is actually a long running radio show (now televised for 60 minutes) which features country music singing and other acts. We'll start off with a supper at our house before heading for the Opry which runs from 9:30 to 11:30 PM. You may want to consider setting aside some time for a nap in the afternoon! This is an optional event but I heartily recommend it. Please remember to add it on the registration form so we will know how many tickets to buy.
The weather in Nashville in late fall should be pleasant with daytime temperatures in the 60's (F) and cool evenings so bring a light jacket. Except for the traditional black tie Wassail Banquet and the scientific sessions the program is casual so comfortable clothes and shoes are recommended for all of the afternoon programs and other dinners.
If you are interested in before or after meeting excursions in Tennessee or middle America, please email me at hwjones3@comcast.net. Pat and I can suggest a variety of possibilities from hiking in the Smokey Mountains to visiting Elvis Presley's Graceland in Memphis. We usually travel to and from Europe via Chicago - a much more convenient airport than New York and a great city to visit. Atlanta is another possibility you might consider.
We look forward to welcoming you to Vanderbilt and Nashville!
