Dear SPS Members,
Please save the dates of September 15-18, for the 2010 SPS meeting.
The Society's annual meeting will be hosted by the University of North Carolina and Duke University, located in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. Both universities have long (American) traditions:
· UNC is the oldest public university in the United States, founded in 1789. The UNC-Chapel Hill campus is now the flag-ship campus of the large university system in the state of North Carolina.
· UNC School of Medicine became a four year medical school in 1952 and has rapidly grown in national reputation.
· Duke, a "younger " school (founded in 1924), has rapidly grown into one of the nation's leading research Universities
· Both Universities and their Schools of Medicine have strong international reputations
· And, both have strong basketball traditions!
In the short time we have together, we hope to share with you our history and traditions, enjoy fellowship with our members and guests and have a fantastic scientific program.
We will be staying at the Washington Duke Inn located adjacent to the Duke University Campus. This is a beautiful hotel located on an award winning golf course We have been able to negotiate a great room rates ($219 (US)/night). You are encouraged to book your room into the SPS block early. (This is a "football weekend" at Duke and UNC so alumni will be booking rooms too). You may reserve a room by contacting the Washington Duke Inn directly: https://reservations.ihotelier.com/crs/g_reservation.cfm?groupID=433136&hotelID=11999 or by phone: (800) 443-3853. Plan to arrive by air at the Raleigh-Durham airport (RDU) which is serviced by all of the national air-carriers and is a 20 minute ride to the hotel.
The scientific meetings will be held at the Washington Duke Inn. Activities planned include:
· Tour of the Duke and University of North Carolina Campuses
· Visit the Duke Homestead: The origins of rolled cigarettes, hydroelectric power in the Southern United States, and the Duke fortune which funded Duke University and Medical Center

For the golfers in our group, the Washington Duke Inn is located on the Duke University Golf Course--a championship course designed by Robert Trent Jones, and one of the best golf courses in North Carolina. There are plenty of outdoor activities in the area as well.
If you are staying a bit longer, Saturday afternoon has many optional possibilities including: college football games at Duke and UNC, Durham Bulls baseball (Triple A professional team and the focus of the movie "Bull Durham"), local University and State of North Carolina art museum and exploring the area. We are 2.5 hours from the beach and 3 hours from the Blue Ridge Mountains. Saturday evening we would invite you to dinner at our home and then attend a local theatrical production.
More details will be coming in our next mailing. Please make plans to be with us in September!
